What is WHOIS and what information does it provide?

WHOIS is a service for retrieving registration information about domains, IP addresses, and autonomous systems. Depending on the target type, the result may include the domain registrar, creation and expiration dates, domain statuses, name servers, the organization responsible for an IP range, and an ASN.

How can I check a domain using WHOIS online?

Enter the domain name without `https://` or a page path, select RDAP or WHOIS, and start the lookup. The online WHOIS tool will display available domain registration details, including the registrar, registration dates, current statuses, and authoritative name servers.

What is the difference between RDAP and traditional WHOIS?

RDAP returns structured data in a standardized format, supports internationalized content, and is easier for software to process. Traditional WHOIS usually returns raw text whose format depends on the registry or registrar. RDAP is generally more convenient for regular checks, while WHOIS is useful for viewing the registry's original text response.

Why does WHOIS not show the domain owner's name and contact details?

The domain owner's personal information may be hidden under privacy protection rules, GDPR requirements, or a WHOIS Privacy service. In this case, the response contains redacted or replacement contact details but will usually continue to show the registrar, registration dates, domain statuses, and name servers.

How can I find out who owns an IP address?

Enter an IPv4 or IPv6 address and run an RDAP or WHOIS lookup. The result may identify the organization that received the IP range, the network block, the regional internet registry, and abuse-reporting contacts. This information does not necessarily identify the individual user of the IP address.

What information can I find using an ASN?

An ASN WHOIS lookup can identify the autonomous system name, network operator, regional registry, and available contact information. Enter the number in a format such as `AS13335`. ASN information is useful for analyzing BGP routing and identifying the provider responsible for a network.

Can WHOIS tell me whether a domain is available?

The absence of registration data in WHOIS may indicate that a domain is available, but it is not definitive confirmation. Some domain extensions limit WHOIS responses or use different data sources, so you should verify availability through a domain registrar before attempting registration.
